In
sampling the preaching ministry of Eastminster, we have included a sermon series
on "The Great Ends of the Church." They are based on a section
at the beginning of our Book of Order. This is a succinct
definition of the purpose and mission of the church for those who question the
relevance of the church ("All that matters is my relationship to
God" or "I can stay home and read my Bible" or "You don't
have to go to church to be a Christian"). It is also a handy reminder
for the church. "Church people" sometimes need to be reminded of
what the church is and what the church does--when it really is the church. It
became the basis for study at two General Assemblies of the Presbyterian Church
(U.S.A.) as the 20th Century ended. In preaching this series, we just
followed their lead. (Please click on the title of the
sermon you wish to view.)
But, there's more!

Every once in a
while, a sermon seems especially helpful to some of the
congregation. (Well, it can happen!) When a copy of a
sermon is requested, it is put into written communication form and
published on this Web site. This becomes the Sermon of the Month.
