Worship Service for 9/20/2020
A grudge: a persistent feeling of ill will or resentment resulting from a past insult or injury.
If you really think about it, the meaning of “grudge” has ugliness all over it: ill will, resentment, insult, injury. There is nothing pleasant or forward-moving about any of these.
The point of the parable—both at the level of Jesus and the level of Matthew's Gospel—is that God saves by grace, not by our worthiness. That applies to all of us.
No one will be cheated. If someone complains or grumbles because someone else did not come to saving faith until late in life then they show that they truly do not understand the grace of God. Everyone who is saved should be eternally grateful for the grace of God that spared them…even if it was early in life.
We should rejoice as heaven does when one sinner, no matter what time that is, comes to saving faith. The fact that any of us were saved should make us exceedingly grateful to the master of the house for paying for our redemption at the expense of His own life. None of us deserved that!
For the sake of God’s kingdom where all are welcome and treated fairly, may this be our prayer:
Let today be the day we finally release ourselves from the imprisonment of past grudges and anger. Simplify our lives, Lord and help us let go of the poisonous past and live abundantly in your beautiful present... today. Amen
